European Commission adopts Transport 2050 strategy
On 28th March 2011, the European Commission (EC) adopted a comprehensive strategy called Transport 2050 for a competitive transport system that it claimed will increase mobility, remove major barriers in key areas and support growth and employment.
At the same time, the proposals will dramatically reduce Europe's dependence on imported oil and cut carbon emissions in transport by 60% by 2050. Click here to read the full press release.
To this end, the European Commission's Mobility and Transport Directorate-General (DG) has produced a White Paper called the Transport 2050 roadmap to a Single European Transport Area which contains several areas of relevance to FEHRL. Although the road sector has been generally critical of the paper because of its heavy emphasis on shifting transport from road to rail and water, the strategy details some important elements that will strengthen the sector.
A key FEHRL message that was taken onboard by the EC's strategy is the need for a climate change resilient network. Other FEHRL specific inputs included the greening of infrastructure (including alternative and recycled materials) and a recogniition of the innovation of the civil engineering sector.
