FOREX meeting coincides with need for Resilient Road element
Floods in Brussels highlight increased need for Resilient Road element of the Forever Open Road programme.
Members of the working group in charge of the technical content of the Forever Open Road programme (WG FOREX) struggled to arrive to their meeting at FEHRL's offices on Tuesday 23rd August due to flash flooding that had struck parts of Belgium that morning. Some participants were forced to remove shoes and socks to wade through the flooded Boulevard de la Woluwe (see photos below). Abatement of road flooding is covered by the "Resilient Road" element of the Forever Open Road programme, which will lead the "Drainage systems and flood resilience" innovation topic. In this case, the practical experience of the problems that the Forever Open Road programme aims to overcome was welcomed in good spirits, but the recognition of the severe disruption caused by such an event underlined the importance of the work.
